U.S. Tax Forms

Do I Need To File a Tax Form?

ALL international students who were in the U.S. for any days in 2017 must complete an IRS Form 8843 for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It is required by U.S. federal law even if you did not work.

If you did not work in the U.S. in 2017, you will not pay any taxes, but you are still required to complete Form 8843.

If you did work in the U.S. in 2017, you are required to file a complete tax return which includes Form 8843 and Form 1040 NR or NR-EZ to determine if you owe taxes or if you are due a refund. The filing deadline is April 17, 2018. Depending on your tax status, you may be required to file a California State tax return as well.

We highly recommend using the online tax preparation service called Sprintax to guide you through the tax filing process and avoid IRS penalties and fines. For most students, this only takes about 20 minutes.

SBCC has pre-paid for up to 200 students. Enter the School Access code: SNBCC2017B in the ‘Review your order’ section.

Here is a link to the Sprintax FAQ page for those of you that have questions before you get started.

IMPORTANT: Sprintax is the only tax filing service we recommend to F-1 students. Most of the other tax filing companies do NOT have the specialized training in F-1 tax filing regulations. Sprintax is one of the only services that specializes in tax filing for international students. Incorrectly filed tax returns may result in owing back taxes and late fees.

How to I file the Form 8843?

To fill out and file the Form 8843 properly, we recommend students to use the online tax filing service Sprintax. The fee is $14.95, but SBCC has pre-paid for up to 200 students. Enter the School Access code: SNBCC2017B in the ‘Review your order’ section.

Sprintax is an easy-to-use, step-by-step tool that helps you prepare your 8843 form online. Just follow their instructions, answer a few questions, and Sprintax will do the rest.

Why do I need to file tax forms?

1. The most important reason to file a return is that it is a legal requirement of the United States.

Failing to file may impact the status of your current visa and make future U.S. visa applications

difficult.

2. Avoid penalties – If you miss the April 17th deadline you may face late filing penalties. Filing

prior to this date prevents this, so the earlier you file, the better.

3. If you worked in the U.S. you may be owed a tax refund – most international students filing a tax

return are due a tax refund for overpaid tax. The average refund is $800 - $1000. It’s worth checking

if you are due a refund.
