Volunteer Opportunity: United Way Day of Caring

The annual United Way Day of Caring is set for Saturday, Sept. 17 from 8:00am to 1:00pm. Over 1,200 volunteers sign up for this annual event and go to various worksites throughout Santa Barbara County to assist local nonprofits, schools and parks with activities such as sorting food, painting, and gardening. To sign up as an SBCC Team member, please contact Lisa Lopez at extension 2792. ISSP Advisor Drop-In Hours

Advisors are available to answer your quick questions on Mondays through Thursdays from 10:00am to 11:00am, and from 2:00pm to 3:00pm during drop-in hours. All walk-ins are seen on the first-come, first-served basis. Appointments are only available on Fridays. To schedule a Friday appointment please call the ISSP Office at (805)730-4040.



If you want to travel abroad during the semester, meet with your Advisor before booking your flight so they can advise you accordingly. Students planning to travel abroad during winter break should follow the “travel signature” request deadline that will be sent out by email in November!!

I-20 Ready for Pick Up

If you transferred from another institution in the USA to SBCC in the Fall, we ask that you please remember to pick up your new I-20 form as soon as possible.

Late Start Classes

International students are required to maintain enrollment in 12.0 credits each semester. If you are not enrolled in 12.0 credits and need help finding another class, come to ISSP to ask for help. Do not hesitate!

Pass/No Pass

Students can opt to request the “Pass/No Pass” grading option for certain classes that are not required for your major. If your work is equivalent to a "C" or higher, you will receive a "Pass", but no letter grade. Many students choose this option for a subject that they have had trouble with in the past. Meet with an Academic Counselor in the International Office to make sure you understand the rules and instructions to apply.

Last Day to Withdraw from Classes

The last day to withdraw from most classes at SBCC is Friday, October 21. Check your schedule for a list of critical dates that apply to your classes. For most classes, students will not be able to drop classes after October 21 and will earn a letter grade for the class. Please schedule an appointment to meet with your Advisor before you drop any classes to ensure that you are not violating the requirements of your F-1 visa.

Priority Filing for Degrees

FALL 2016 Degree and Certificate Priority Filing Period begins September 6, 2016 and ends on October 20, 2016. View instructions and forms here: Meet with an Academic Counselor in the International Office if you have questions or need assistance.


If you are earning an Associate degree this semester, you can apply for a one-year work permit called “OPT”. The deadline to apply is 60 days after graduation. The priority filing deadline is October 15. Here is the link to the OPT application and further information: .

Update Your Address in Pipeline

All students must list their most current local address, email, and phone number in Pipeline.


The campus community is encouraged to sign up for Alert U, SBCC’s emergency alert notification system, which uses your cell phone to deliver brief text messages. There is no charge for the service; the only fees involved are what your cell phone carrier charges you for text messages. To sign up, go to:

Check the ISSP Calendar for upcoming workshops at the Learning Resource Center and the Gateway Center. The workshops are designed to teach students skills to enhance their academic performance and ensure student success. Some instructors will award extra credit points for participating in these workshops!

Memory Techniques/Study Skills

Learn how to study with more confidence and efficiency through specific memory techniques and skill building. Meet on Thursday, September 15, in CAI LAB 2 in the Cartwright Learning Resource Center from 1:00pm to 2:50pm.

Your Writing Process

There is more than one way to write a paper. Explore different approaches for identifying what works for you. Meet on Thursday, September 22, in the Cartwright Resources Center from 1:00pm to 2:00pm.

Manage your time effectively and create healthier lifestyle patterns. Meet on Thursday, September 29, in the CAI LAB 2 in the Cartwright Learning Resource Center from 1:00pm to 2:50pm.

Did You Miss the T.A.G. Information Session?

If you missed the T.A.G. information session in September 9, you can still find the information on the Transfer Center website at T.A.G. means Transfer Admission Guarantee, and this program is an opportunity for international students to take advantage of some of the transfer agreements that SBCC has made with various CSU and UC schools in California. For further information please contact the Transfer Academy . Additional meetings will be held on September 16 and 23 at 8:30am & 10:30am.

Club Day

Be active and have fun. This is your opportunity to check out some of the clubs on campus. Club Day will take place on Wednesday, September 14 from 10:00am to 2:00pm in front of the East Campus Cafeteria. Come see what some of the clubs on campus offer.

Job and Internship Fair 2016

The Fall Job Fair will take place on September 15, 2016 from 10:00am – 2:00pm on the West Campus Walkways. The Volunteer and Non-Profit Jobs and Internships Fair will take place on October 13, 2016 from 11:00am to 2:00pm on the main campus Friendship Plaza. Volleyball Tournament

The International Student Volleyball Tournament is almost here! The tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, October 1 at West Beach. Team packets are ready for pick up at the ISSP Office. Team Captains MUST attend a Technical Meeting on Friday, September 30 at 3:00pm in room ECC-18. Individual sign ups should post their information on the “SBCC Beach Volleyball Tournament” Facebook Event Page to be recruited. Go to SBCC Ambassadors on Facebook to find the Event Page. A fee of $5.00 per player is required to play. Submit the completed packet and fee to the International Office no later than Monday, September 26, 2016 by 4:00pm. Conversation Café

You are invited each week to hang out, enjoy some drinks and snacks, and have fun talking with American friends! through this program, you will be matched with an American Friendship Partner from the Santa Barbara community. Your Friendship Partner will invite you to do something once or twice a month – like have you to their home for a meal, show you around the area, or include you in his/her life activities. This is a great way to make an American friend, to learn about the culture, and to discover what life is like for the “locals” living in Santa Barbara. Your friendship partner will also want you to share about your culture and life experiences. Join us on Thursdays from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at The Loft at Ocean Hills – 821 State Street (above Sur La Table store). The Atkinson Gallery

The SBCC Atkinson Gallery proudly Presents Devon Tsuno / Los Angeles River: Urban Reclamation/ September 16 through December 2, 2016. Reception: Friday, September 16, 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Tsuno has exhibited internationally, recent solo exhibitions include Occidental College (Los Angeles), Roppongi 605 (Tokyo), PØST (Los Angeles), and Azusa Pacific University (Los Angeles). Tsuno’s work has been featured in notable group exhibitions in the US at the Hammer Museum Venice Beach Biennial, the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, Torrance Art Museum, Sam Lee Gallery, Carl Berg Gallery, Monte Vista Projects, Ruth Bachofner Gallery and Summercamp's ProjectProject. Tsuno was the artist in residence at Chloë Flores FB, and Stichting Kaus Australis in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He was awarded a 2014 California Community Foundation Emerging Artist Fellowship for Visual Art. Since 2003, Devon has worked as the founder/director of Concrete Walls, an artist-run curatorial project that focuses on building community by facilitating collaborations, educational projects, and group exhibitions throughout Southern California. He is an Assistant Professor of Art at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Tsuno received an MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 2005 and a BFA from California State University, Long Beach in 2002.
