Group Advising

Academic Group Advising is a mandatory session for all international students. An Academic Counselor will review the results of your Assessment Test, and explain what classes you are eligible to take. Important information will be provided during the Group Advising session about degree requirements, pre-requisites, the registration process, and class schedule planning. An Academic Counselor will work with students to develop a first-semester schedule that fits the educational goals and personal abilities of each individual student.

Last Day to Add/Drop Classes

Friday June 17 is the last day to add or drop classes for the Summer Session. After June 17, students will not receive a refund for any class that is dropped. To add a class after school begins (and before the add deadline) a student must attend the class and obtain an add code from the instructor.

The Student Services building will close at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 17 and the Admissions Office and Cashier's Office will not be available.

Assessment Test

New international students who take advantage of the Early Bird Check-in will also be able to take part in the Early Bird Assessment Test. All new SBCC students take the Assessment Test to determine what level of English and Math classes they can enroll in during their first semester.

Check your Registration Steps sheet and appointment ticket for your test time and location. Bring a #2 pencil (you can buy one in the bookstore), your Assessment Test appointment card, and a form of personal ID (your passport is fine).

Priority Filing for Degrees begins

Students who will complete all of the requirements for a degree or certificate program during the Spring semester are encouraged to file the paperwork during the Priority Filing period. The Priority Filing period begins February 15 and ends March 24.

To file for a degree, visit the Academic Counseling department forms website to download the paperwork. Students must verify eligibility for a degree or certificate using the SBCC DARS system, or by meeting with an Academic Counselor. Petition for Pass/No Pass due

Students who wish to take any course as Pass / No Pass instead of taking it for a letter grade should first consult with an Academic Counselor. Some courses that are taken to fulfill department requirements for a degree can only be taken for a letter grade.

The Pass/No Pass petition must be approved by the course instructor and submitted to the Admissions office by February 24. The Admissions office closes at 1:00 PM on this day.

Spring Break lasts from March 26 - March 30. There will be no classes held during Spring Break, but most offices will be open. The International Office will be open from 8 AM - 4 PM Monday through Friday.

Don't forget! Students who wish to travel outside of the U.S. during Spring Break need to request a travel signature for the I-20. Bring your I-20 to the International Office at least one week prior to your travel date!

Spring Semester ends

Spring Semester ends

May 22 is the official last day of the Spring semester. Enjoy the summer break!

International students who complete an Associate degree program have a 60-day grace period after the semester ends to either transfer to another school, apply for OPT, or return to their home country.

International students who will not return to SBCC after spring semester must submit a copy of their flight details to the International Office in order to close their F-1 visa immigration file. The flight details can be e-mailed or faxed to an Advisor, or you can stop by the International Office and say good bye!

Students who will enroll in a class during summer school should remember that the summer session begins on June 14.

Students who will enroll in classes for the fall semester should remember that the fall session begins on August 23.

Tuesday, June 1 is Check-in Day for all new international students who will begin studies at SBCC in the Summer Session. Students must report to the International Office to check-in and receive instructions for taking the Assessment Test, attending WAVE Day, meeting with a counselor for Academic Advising, and finally registering for classes. All students should bring their passports and I-20s to check-in.

Assessment Test

Assessment of your skills in English and mathematics helps you achieve your goals in college by placing you into classes in which you will be successful. It is important to do your best during testing so you will be placed in the highest courses possible.

The Assessment Test is not a "pass or fail" exam; the results determine the level of English or math skills that you have, so that you will be placed into the right courses. Students can prepare for the Assessment Test by reading the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on the Assessment website, and review sample test questions.

International Students will all take the Assessment Test at 1:00 PM. Students must check-in to the International Office before 1:00 PM on Tuesday in order to receive an appointment card for the Assessment Test.
