SPRING BREAK

SBCC Spring Break lasts from Monday, March 28 through Friday, April 1. There are no classes during Spring Break, but the International Office will be open to assist students!

Group Advising

Academic Group Advising is a mandatory session for all international students. An Academic Counselor will review the results of your Assessment Test, and explain what classes you are eligible to take. Important information will be provided during the Group Advising session about degree requirements, pre-requisites, the registration process, and class schedule planning. An Academic Counselor will work with students to develop a first-semester schedule that fits the educational goals and personal abilities of each individual student.

Last Day to Add/Drop Classes

Friday June 17 is the last day to add or drop classes for the Summer Session. After June 17, students will not receive a refund for any class that is dropped. To add a class after school begins (and before the add deadline) a student must attend the class and obtain an add code from the instructor.

The Student Services building will close at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 17 and the Admissions Office and Cashier's Office will not be available.

Last Day to Withdraw

October 22, 2010 is the last day to withdraw from Santa Barbara City College and receive "W" marks on SBCC transcripts instead of letter grades or pass/no pass marks.

Priority Filing for Degree

FALL 2011 Degree and Certificate Priority Filing Period begins September 12, 2011 and ends October 27, 2011.

Students can apply for Fall 2011 degrees and certificates by doing the following:

1. Students with transcripts from other colleges or universities will need to see an academic counselor on a walk in basis in the Counseling Office, or meet with Jennifer Hamilton in the International Office.

Veteran's Day - SBCC Closed

Veteran's Day is a federal holiday. Public services and many schools are closed on Veteran's Day in honor of those men and women who have served in the US military.

Most public offices will be closed, such as the Post Office and the DMV. There will be no classes held at SBCC on Veteran's Day.

Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada. Thanksgiving dinner is held on this day, usually as a gathering of family members and friends.

Assessment Test

New international students who take advantage of the Early Bird Check-in will also be able to take part in the Early Bird Assessment Test. All new SBCC students take the Assessment Test to determine what level of English and Math classes they can enroll in during their first semester.

Check your Registration Steps sheet and appointment ticket for your test time and location. Bring a #2 pencil (you can buy one in the bookstore), your Assessment Test appointment card, and a form of personal ID (your passport is fine).

PD 101B

All new incoming international students are required to enroll in Personal Development 101B: Orientation to College for International Students. PD 101B is a half-unit CSU transferable course, which is required for all new international students studying in an academic program. The course provides students with an overview of the US higher education system, US culture etiquette, and provides strategies for coping with the cultural adjustment process and US American culture.

This is a week-long course, and students must attend class every day to earn credit for it. The course begins on Tuesday, January 18, and ends on Friday, January 21. Students will enroll in the class during WAVE Week Registration sessions and it will be listed on the Student Schedule.

All new incoming international students are required to enroll in Personal Development 101B: Orientation to College for International Students. PD 101B is a half-unit CSU transferable course, which is required for all new international students studying in an academic program. The course provides students with an overview of the US higher education system, US culture etiquette, and provides strategies for coping with the cultural adjustment process and US American culture.

This is a week-long course, and students must attend class every day to earn credit for it. The course begins on Tuesday, January 18, and ends on Friday, January 21. Students will enroll in the class during WAVE Week Registration sessions and it will be listed on the Student Schedule.

SBCC Spring semester BEGINS

The first day of classes for Santa Barbara City College is Monday, January 23, 2012. Be sure to arrive to class on time so that the teach knows you are there! Instructors may DROP students from class if the student does not show up during the first week.

Add/Drop Deadline

February 3 is the deadline to add or drop most of the classes at SBCC. All international students are required to be enrolled in at least 12.0 credits each semester. If you are having trouble adding classes, contact the International Office right away to ask for help!

Priority Filing for Degrees begins

Students who will complete all of the requirements for a degree or certificate program during the Spring semester are encouraged to file the paperwork during the Priority Filing period. The Priority Filing period begins February 15 and ends March 24.

To file for a degree, visit the Academic Counseling department forms website to download the paperwork. Students must verify eligibility for a degree or certificate using the SBCC DARS system, or by meeting with an Academic Counselor. SBCC CLOSED

In honor of President Abraham Lincoln's birthday, SBCC will be closed on Friday, February 18, 2011. There will be no classes held, and all administrative offices will be closed.

Many public offices will also be closed on Friday, February 18, 2011. This includes the Post Office, the Department of Motor Vehicles, public schools, and some private businesses.

SBCC CLOSED

In honor of President George Washington, Santa Barbara City College will be closed on Monday, February 21, 2010. There will be no classes held, and the administrative offices will be closed all day.

Petition for Pass/No Pass due

Students who wish to take any course as Pass / No Pass instead of taking it for a letter grade should first consult with an Academic Counselor. Some courses that are taken to fulfill department requirements for a degree can only be taken for a letter grade.

The Pass/No Pass petition must be approved by the course instructor and submitted to the Admissions office by February 24. The Admissions office closes at 1:00 PM on this day.

Spring Break

Spring Break lasts from March 26 - March 30. There will be no classes held during Spring Break, but most offices will be open. The International Office will be open from 8 AM - 4 PM Monday through Friday.

Don't forget! Students who wish to travel outside of the U.S. during Spring Break need to request a travel signature for the I-20. Bring your I-20 to the International Office at least one week prior to your travel date!

Finally, if you travel to Mexico, we recommend that you read the most recent travel advisory with information specific for each region and travel destination in Mexico: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_5665.html. Take the contact information for your home country's embassy or consulate located in Mexico with you.

Assessment Opens

The Assessment Lab will re-open on April 2, 2012 for the Spring Semester. Students who wish to take the Math Assessment for the first time and students who wish to re=-take the Math Assessment, may go to the drop-in hours at the Assessment Lab, located on the second floor of Student Services.

Commencement Ceremony

Join the graduating class of 2011 as they receive their degrees, certificates and awards. Families and friends are welcome to attend the Commencement ceremony and share in the excitement and honor of this event.

Spring Semester ends

May 22 is the official last day of the Spring semester. Enjoy the summer break!

International students who complete an Associate degree program have a 60-day grace period after the semester ends to either transfer to another school, apply for OPT, or return to their home country.

International students who will not return to SBCC after spring semester must submit a copy of their flight details to the International Office in order to close their F-1 visa immigration file. The flight details can be e-mailed or faxed to an Advisor, or you can stop by the International Office and say good bye!

Students who will enroll in a class during summer school should remember that the summer session begins on June 14.

Students who will enroll in classes for the fall semester should remember that the fall session begins on August 23.

Check-in Day

Tuesday, June 1 is Check-in Day for all new international students who will begin studies at SBCC in the Summer Session. Students must report to the International Office to check-in and receive instructions for taking the Assessment Test, attending WAVE Day, meeting with a counselor for Academic Advising, and finally registering for classes. All students should bring their passports and I-20s to check-in.

The International Office opens at 8:00 AM and will close at 4:00 PM.

Assessment Test

Assessment of your skills in English and mathematics helps you achieve your goals in college by placing you into classes in which you will be successful. It is important to do your best during testing so you will be placed in the highest courses possible.

The Assessment Test is not a "pass or fail" exam; the results determine the level of English or math skills that you have, so that you will be placed into the right courses. Students can prepare for the Assessment Test by reading the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on the Assessment website, and review sample test questions.

International Students will all take the Assessment Test at 1:00 PM. Students must check-in to the International Office before 1:00 PM on Tuesday in order to receive an appointment card for the Assessment Test.

WAVE Day

All new international students are required to attend the WAVE Day Orientation. Students will learn about the requirements for staying in legal status while on the F-1 visa, hear about important information to make the first semester at SBCC a success, and participate in workshops and activities to meet other international students. Lunch will be provided!

The time and location of your WAVE Day Orientation are listed on the Check-in sheet that you received from the International Office.

Registration

After the Academic Group Advising session, students will register for classes for the summer session. Academic Counselors will be available to assist students with the registration process, and answer any questions about what classes to take and about how to use Pipeline. Students must attend this registration session to enroll in classes for the Summer Session.

Remember, students are required to pay tuition and fees for all registered classes within 7 days of enrollment.

Summer Session begins

June 18 is the official first day of Summer Session courses. Remember to be on time and to attend every class - instructors may drop students from classes for non-attendance during the first week!

Locate your classrooms before the first day of school so that you know which campus you should be on. If you need help finding a classroom, contact the International Office.

Labor Day SBCC Closed

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday. Most public services will be closed on Monday, September 3 for Labor Day - this includes the post office, the DMV, and most schools including SBCC.

Labor Day was enacted by Congress in 1882, Labor Day was originally envisioned by Grover Cleveland to "celebrate the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations with a parade exhibit to the public, and free electronic greeting cards for all US citizens."

Pass/No Pass Petition deadline

This is the last day to submit a petition to change the course grading option for your classes. Make sure to speak with an Academic Counselor and your instructor before you decide to take a class Pass/No Pass, as there are some restrictions.
